A fashion show this weekend will feature garments of all kinds of colors, but the real theme is ‘green'.
Redress Raleigh is a show in which 18 designers are given the challenge of creating a collection of eco-friendly fashions.
"We wanted them to showcase garments that had a strong focus on eco-friendly fabrics," said Elizabeth Stewart, one of the show's co-producers. "A lot of them are doing things that are deconstructed, like taking old t-shirts and changing them into dresses."
Designer and North Carolina State University student Ashley Tucker said her collection, ‘Circa 1997' modernizes clothes that are more than a decade old.
"There are a lot of ‘90s business suits, old tops and skirts," said Tucker. "Judging from what my stuff started as, to what it is now, it's night and day. So I think people will be surprised with what we can do."
Co-producer and designer Jamie Powell said she hopes the movement for eco-friendly fashion catches on in the mainstream.
"Eco-fashion isn't just some hippie thing," she said. "It's very high-fashion, it's very accessible, and it's an easy way to be green in everyday life."
The show is part of the Hillsborough Street Renaissance Festival, held March 14. Redress Raleigh is to run from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. at Aurora Nightclub, 2526 Hillsborough St (above Sir Speedy and Charley's).
Admission is free, or $25 and $15 VIP tickets are available online.
The show is coproduced by Triangle Emerging Green Builders, American Vintage, and MorLove.
